Associate Lawyer

We are seeking to hire a lawyer who is passionate about child welfare and family law to join our team.

Position Overview

As a lawyer, you will play a crucial role in providing expert legal advice and representation to clients involved in all aspects of child protection and family law matters. You will attend at court for conference, motions, and trials. You will work with others on cases as well as manage your own files. You will have a strong work ethic, strong organizational skills, excellent writing and legal analysis skills, and a strong work ethic. A commitment to child protection and family law is essential, as is an understanding of the systemic issues that relate to these areas.

Responsibilities

  • Your responsibilities will include but not be limited to the following:
  • Represent clients in child protection and family law proceedings before all levels of court in Ontario and at the Child and Family Services Review Board.
  • Prepare for and conduct trials and appeals
  • Attend at mediation and arbitrations
  • Conduct settlement meetings
  • Draft pleadings, affidavits, conference briefs, facta, separation agreements
  • Provide independent legal advice on agreements
  • Prepare financial statements and financial disclosure
  • Legal research and writing
  • File management and organization
  • Manage client expectations and requests
  • Work with other lawyers as necessary
  • Billing and docketing

Qualifications

You will have the following qualifications and characteristics:

  • Licensed to practice law in Ontario
  • Minimum one year experience practicing child welfare and family law or demonstrated interest in child welfare and family law
  • Excellent research, writing, and oral advocacy skills
  • Excellent communications skills
  • Strong attention to detail, time management, and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated interest and experience working with vulnerable people or under-serviced groups
  • Knowledge of the systemic issues underpinning child welfare and family law
  • Ability to work under tight timelines and under pressure
  • Ability to work independently
  • High degree of responsibility and dependability
